Five weeks ago, our Benny (20) had some not so good blood work. His kidneys were starting to fail. We are both working from home these days and kept a close eye on him. He seemed like himself until Wednesday, when he seemed "quieter" to me.
Yesterday, he couldn't lift his legs to get into the litter box. Thanks to someone in this group, I realized he smelled like ammonia. I made the call and we helped him to the Bridge this morning. It was peaceful. The only negative was that masks and crying made for a wet mess.
I don't regret our decision. He still had bits of personality left but it indeed was time. His body was tired.
He was my husband's cat before I moved in, and hubby is devastated. I know 20 years is a long time, but as you all know, it's never enough time.
Rest in peace, sweet boy. We're sure going to miss you.
He shared a good life with loving people. Maybe you and your husband will find it in your hearts some day to open your home to a whiskered friend in need.
Rene again, let me add my heartfelt feelings toward the loss of Sweet Benny! Benny, we heard so much for so long about you buddy. You are a hero on here and the board will never be the same without you. May you Rest In Peace, baby Benny, til we meet you again at Rainbow Bridge. You will be forever missed to us all!
Quality of life is so important and it sounds like he had 20 years of good life. Your heart aches but take solace in knowing that Benny is no longer suffering.

Thank you for the kind thoughts, everyone. I credit this group with knowing when the "right" time was for him.
The hardest time for me these days is in the early morning, when I feed our remaining cats (3). I just start crying. Benny was on several medications and supplements and it's sad that I no longer have to do this.
We appreciate your and other cat lovers' support. It keeps us going.
