The two killer apps for my smartphone are email and maps/GPS. It would be very hard to give either of those up, especially as I’m a freelancer and work remotely all the time. My solution is to have a Wi-Fi only iPad and an iPhone. Having cellular on both would be very expensive.
Nah, I'd rather have the phone. My iPhone 5s is with me everywhere, in my pocket. I did just get an iPad recently, and actually there are now two in the house, one iPad Air and one iPad Mini. The Mini is not small enough to me to carry around for everyday stuff. (Mine is actually the Air.) I've heard talk of people carrying the Mini or similar sized tablets in jacket pockets and such, and I guess it fits sometimes, but to me it's still too large/awkward even for that. For those who always have a bag along I suppose it could go along most everywhere.
Being able to look something up anywhere within cell range or snap a really good photo anywhere (without having to carry or remember to take something extra) is hard to retreat from. Even though some of this was practically not possible even just a few years ago, it's hard to imagine not having it now.
GSM already allows for this without a radio module switch. Just switch the SIM card.
Problem with that is that not all tablets (including the iPad) have cellular connectivity.
All iPads can be tethered wirelessly via Bluetooth or Wifi hotspots. The iPads with cellular connectivity are at least $100 more than the model without it. Even if you swap the SIM between compatible devices, only 1 device can make/receive phone calls at a time. I am not referring to VOIP services like Skype or Vonage.
I say everyone should carry a smartphone, tablet, laptop, and smartwatch at all times.

Yup, that's the better option, no way I'd carry a tablet around with me, why carry 2 devices instead of one? My tablet (Nexus 7) stays home, my phone (Nexus 4) stays with me.
One of the reasons why I got a Gen 2 Nexus 7 was because it could fit in my coat pocket. Can't do that with an iPad mini. It comes in handy on flights.
