Let's keep this in perspective......spam is nothing more than an inconvenience. Just ignore it and don't answer the phone for unknown calls. My philosophy is that if it isn't important enough for them to leave a message, I won't even give it a second thought. If I do answer a spam call by accident or suspect a message left is spam, I hang up or delete the message. There are far more important things to stress about. Somehow I doubt anybody has died from a spam message/call.
I see now calls coming from India using US area codes trying to sell male enhancement. I left the post office after mailing a package and a few hours later got a call asking me about male enhancement, I was confused thinking it was the post office and asking, how in the world can I enhance a package shipment, until I catch on after about 30 seconds and the guy tells me he is selling sex pills and I hung up.
I notice a lot of the spam on both my and my wife's phone begins with both our area code and exchange - just the last 4 digits are different from our own phone.
"Neighbor spoofing takes place when the caller falsifies the caller ID to match the area code and first three digits of the recipient’s phone number, instead of the caller’s number or the number where the call was actually originating, the FCC said"
So my wife just received a panicked phone call from her 88 year old mother.
She had gotten a recording from the "IRS" stating she owed money and that a warrant for her arrest has been issued and she is to call a certain number.
My wife's call was because mom-in-law kept calling the number but it was always busy and she didn't know what to do.
I told her to tell Mom it is a known scam and that she has nothing to worry about. The real IRS doesn't call you, they write you a letter. That calmed her down and all was OK.
Of course, we are well familiar with this scam and have received this call ourselves in the past and have simply ignored it.
But have I mentioned I am Sooo sick of Spam calls on my cellphone or landline? So does my mother-in-law!
If the government can't figure out a way to eliminate spam phone calls there is not much hope for more complicated issues.
