Effective July 1, new FCC standards go into effect, requiring major phone companies to verify that the calls they are handling are not using spoofed numbers. Unfortunately, minor carriers (the source of most spoofed calls) have been given a grace period, but are required to report their progress in implementing the standard to the FCC. 10 robocallers have been sent Cease & Desist letters with a 48 hour time limit, after which phone carriers will be required to stop handling their calls:
My volume of junk phone calls has gone down since July 1. I received a political call from J.D. Vance, after which I blocked all calls from that Ohio area code. I got a spoofed call from my area code. When a message starts mid-stream, I immediately delete it. In this case, they said "Microsoft Windows" before I deleted the call.
I hate to be such a skeptic, but this reminds me of when the Federal Do Not Call List was introduced. It sounded good on paper but it didn't really do much as the robocallers figured out how to get around the rules.
