I have teenagers, so we go to Myrtle Beach frequently. It's a great place if you have kids, but personally, I won't set foot in the place once my kids are grown. The first time I visited the area we booked a week in Charleston, a week in Hilton Head, a week in Myrtle Beach, and then a final week back in Charleston. The moment we hit Myrtle we were wishing we could turn around and go back to HHI. Tacky was the first word that came to me, and I haven't seen much to change my mind. However, if you are just looking for a hotel to beach experience it makes a lot of sense to go MB. The hotel deals once school starts are amazing, and worth it if you can look past the tickytack of the surrounding area.
We love Myrtle Beach! As far as the clarity of the water, I disagree that MB has crystal clear blue water. You won't find that type of ocean water along the SC coast, BUT I happen to think SC beaches in general are among the best on the East Coast. I originally came from New England and the beaches there simply cannot compare. Myrtle beach is a great place for a vacation. I think you will have a great time! Lots to fun things to do!
Well it is all relative. Did I say crystal clear? I meant to just say clear or a lot MORE clear (than Charleston) and a lot prettier color. It is no Yucatan Peninsula but I think the clarity and the color certainly exceeds New England waters and the Pacific coast Santa Cruz/ Monterey area and the east coast of Florida. At least it was 3 years ago. I don't know how it might be after the BP Oil spill and all the Corexit they sprayed.
