Planning our trip to the Charleston area for possible relocation.
We were going to check the West Ashley area as well as Summerville and Mount Pleasant.
Noticed this in the local newspaper and was wondering if the West Ashley area is safe?
We are older and want to be in a safe, peaceful area. I know that violence can happen anywhere and our hearts go out to the family of Marley Lion. So sad, so young.

"CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police made four arrests this week in the June 16 murder of 17-year-old Marley Lion in West Ashley, including the man they say pulled the trigger."

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

There are areas in West Ashley that you want to avoid just like any other place, but the majority of the West Ashley area is perfectly safe and you will be fine. Summerville and Mount pleasant areas are very nice.

I live in West Ashley and feel safe here, but I think Summerville and Mt. P are pretty safe too. I'm glad they have arrested people in connection with the Marley Lion death. Unfortunately, things like that can happen anywhere and it's very tragic . Of course, there are always places you want to avoid at night (or in some cases, avoid altogether), but for such a large area here, I feel like West Ashley has more safe than unsafe.

It's perfectly fine. As mentioned in another thread I forgot to close one of the garage doors overnight without any problem. Not that it's a good idea, but it's a relative measure of safeness anyway. FWIW we're in an older neighborhood called Northbridge Terrace.

There were 1200 shootings so far this year in Chicago, 253 of those involved deaths. I drive and work around the city all too often, and no one is ducking or looking over their shoulder. Still.....I'll take my chances in West Ashley any day. I like it there
