We have been contemplating moving to the Charleston area and always heard good things about Mt. Pleasant and today we drove around in the area to get an idea of what the houses look like. We saw a lot of great gated communities, but we are looking for homes a little more spread out. Are we just driving around in the wrong areas of MP?
We then took a drive over to James Island and really liked that area. I can live anywhere within an hour of an airport since I work from home and travel. That being said, I don't want to live too far away from the Charleston airport. We've also heard Johns Island is nice as well? Any suggestions with street names we should punch into our GPS to look around in MP and Johns Island?
We have a 3 yrd old and we're in our early 40's so good schools are important. Right now our plan is to rent for a year or so and rent our house out in NH to see if this is a good fit for us. We're looking to spend around $1800 a month for rent. Any suggestions, help would be great!
The schools in Mt. P (Public) are no better than James Island Public schools. If you don't want a gated community (I can understand why) there are many nice places on James Island. John's Island schools are not as good. There are also some nice communities in West Ashley which are really closer to the Airport, and the schools there are good too (public).
So are most of the homes in MP in gated communities? Does anyone have an area in West Ashley to check out?
I want to say there's only two gated communities in Mt P. There might be one or two more that I'm not aware of but most of the neighborhoods are not gated.
I'm only coming up with 3 gated communities in Mt. Pleasant of the top of my head. Dunes West, Raven's Run and the gated section of Charleston National out by the golf course.
Which neighborhoods did you hit? A lot of them, i.e. Hamlin Plantation have "gate-houses" at their main entrances, but those are just for appeal, the neighborhoods themselves aren't gated at all. However, the half-acre or more lot size is going to limit you in Mt. Pleasant greatly, or throw your price point well upwards of $700k more often than not. Try Rivertowne, Brickyard Plantation, and Dunes West(gated, then take your first right) just to get a feel for those neighborhoods.

Snee Farm has some larger lots that could be lower than $700K but that's about the only one I can think of.
