NPR reported on 2/17 that the hottest trend in cities right now is rewriting zoning codes to allow more housing. I know Charleston is in the middle of that rewrite, and my city councilman is all about a lot more housing.
There are areas of downtown and close in that need more commercial development. It makes sense to have restaurants, banks, services, and stores with even limited grocery components interspersed with housing. It also keeps more people off the roads.
A problem now is when you fill neighborhoods with too many newer houses or auxiliary units and it clogs streets/parking. Works in some areas but others just look like used car lots.
