I didn't think it was the town. Thought it was the residents in Snee Farms that created a stink about the new box stores...and it wasn't necessarily a Costco -- Home Depot was rumored but nothing was set.
No you're right, but the city listened to the few... The few that were ok with high density housing but not a store...
A lot of the people running Mount Pleasant have small businesses so they have a vested interest in keeping the big box stores out. They have no problem approving apartment or housing developments. Right now the town is too much residential and not enough commercial to support the tax base.
In 2012, Mount Pleasant Town Council voted 5-to-4 to repeal restrictions that limited retailers larger than 70,000 square feet from building on tracts of land smaller than 50 acres.
Pressure from a few residents. It's so short sighted. They complained about traffic, but were ok with high density housing which also adds lots of traffic, but puts more demand on a near capacity infrastructure system.
Folks know very little about traffic patterns, impact of various zoning on an area, etc. They have perceptions of things and react emotionally based on those perceptions.
