Minkey, it went down to 23 here on James Island the other night.
I'd say we usually go into the 20's at least once or twice a year. Sometimes we go into the teens and sometimes it doesn't go below freezing the entire winter. I'm talking about James Island. Farther inland will tend to be a bit colder without the ocean's influence.
It went down to 6 degrees back in '85 (I think) but that was the record low and I've never seen single digits other than that. Last winter was exceptional around the country and it went into the mid teens here.
Oh gosh, 23? I guess I missed it while sleeping.
Only kidding, LocalHero.
It's just I'm not fazed by a whacky dip in temp during a winter night.
I haven't noticed anyone bundled up here during the daytime.
We may actually be moving sooner than expected because of job situations, possibly this June. Does anyone have any suggestions, as we thought wed at least be able to come visit before actually moving down there?

Let's get clear on what you're looking for... Are you planning on renting with a $1500 budget? Is an apartment/condo/townhouse as opposed to a house ok? If so, then you might find something on James Island or Mt Pleasant or close in West Ashley. Those are 3 nice areas that are pretty close to beaches. If you really want a house at that price, you might have to set your sights farther out West Ashley, Hanahan, Summerville or you might luck into a nice section of Park Circle.
If you're buying with a $400k budget, then you can afford almost anywhere around Charleston.
I think we could afford $1500 rent but let's go ahead and say our rent budget would be $900. An apartment would be what we're looking for at this stage. We aren't entirely sure where we will be working but we are both applying to jobs in Charleston.
Additionally, we would like to be as close to the beach as possible.
Just for perspective, in the last year only 2 properties with 3 bdrms rented for under $1,000 on James Island or Mt Pleasant. One was a mobile home on JI and the other a small brick ranch pretty far out on N 17 in Mt P. If we drop to 2 bdrms, 41 properties show up only 3 of which are currently active. Most (probably all) of these places are funky but not necessarily bad, just older.
That's on the MLS... Craigslist might net you something less expensive or going out to West Ashley will be a little less perhaps. Places do come up under $1,000 that are older and 2 bdrm 1.5 bath often enough.
For 3 bedroom houses, there are 3 available now on James Island from $1300 to $1400. Older homes with 1.5 baths.
Check out Craigslist for more perspective but this is why I say you will live much nicer in a $400k house than in a $1,500 rental.
We will definitely be renting. How about 1 bedroom. That is what we will most likely be aiming for. Originally, we weren't planning on coming down until next year but will be shooting for 1 br at this point.
All three of these Mt Pleasant apartments have availability for a quick move in and prices starting in the $1200 range.
http://www.maac.com/ This management company has apartments avail around town starting in the high 800's.
Craigslist is a really good source if you'd prefer to have a home to rent, there's several condos/townhomes around town in that $1000 per month range. Housing is still a bit lacking due to the influx of relocation, but the developers are certainly doing their best to catch up with demand.

I like the Seaside plaza where the Riviera is at. They look like nice apartments too. That might be the first place I'd look to rent in Mt. Pleasant. Tons of stuff within walking distance and the beach is less than a 5 minute drive away.
