This type of post shows up in the Greenville forum about once every two weeks. It is either posted by legitimately concerned people or the usual two or three trolls who hate the city and like to use its conservative reputation as something to complain about.

Even if it is a legit post it is quickly buffed up by the previously mentioned haters and then the three or four city fanboys who consider themselves the defender of the towns good reputation go round and round with the same garbage. Its predictable and tiring.

I know some people from other parts of the country, especially those who are gay have serious concerns about finding themselves in a hostile environment. I can understand that a couple of beatings in life because of what you are will make you cautious about your surroundings, but my advice to liberals or gays or anyone else who has concerns about living in a conservative town. Take some of your own advice and be a little more sensitive when trying to gather your recon.
If you have concerns, be specific. Are there gay clubs? Is there any tattoo culture? What places do people go to listen to the kind of music I like?

The OPs original question and almost every other one I have seen just like it is no different from a conservative who might be moving to Detroit asking
"I hear that Detroit is full of black people? Do they like white people? Will I get shot if I move to detroit? Black people really do not seem to like me so do you think it would be a good idea if I move to detroit?"

Are these legit questions and concerns? Maybe, but you sound like a real ass asking it and chances are the people who's help you are looking to recruit will not be endeared to you and your plight.

It is laughable how often this happens and how ignorant the OP is to how much they seem like the moronic bleeding heart liberal who shows up at a No Carbon Foot Print Event in a Hummer.

There is no problem asking questions and trying to figure out if the culture you are looking for can be found in a place. That is big difference from assuming that the people who live in a certain place are going to be to mean, ignorant and intolerant to let you enjoy your life.

Many SC metropolitan areas can be more liberal/educated/Democratic (Charleston, Columbia, Greenville) then the rest of SC, but get 10-20 miles or more outside those areas and they will lean right, religious, and racist.

Wandering off topic.....(not going to get into a silly argument about which political team is more educated -- that is just silly).......but Tom --your wife doesn't share your distaste for the public school system I hope?

She is a teacher who loves teaching, she just doesn't like the way things are run in Governement Schools, she would rather work for a private school system but a private school could not afford her....

are there things to do at night that don't involve sports or church groups?

how tolerant is the attitude toward gays?

what is the arts scene like? local music scene?

how "republican" or "democrat" of a place is it?

hope that's a little clearer
Charleston is a liberal town in a conservative state. While you'll find the outlying areas to be heavily republican, they have elected on of the most popular Mayors in the United States, Joe Riley, a registered Democrat for the past 36 years.

Your stereotypes are laughable at best.

Most people that live in Charleston are from somewhere else mainly the northeast.
