Hi can anyone tell us what are the advantages of living in the older homes in town vs. the developments? We tend to like older homes, 60s houses, etc. Are they on decent sized lots like 1/4 to 1/2 acre or small? Is crime, etc. an issue. Which section of "in town proper" Summerville has the most crime, i.e., N, S, E, W, etc.? Thanks much for any opinions, facts, or any other input!

The intown lots are pretty large, some over 2 acres. The crime in these areas is very low. Check out the Summerville news paper, they have a crime blotter there.

I live in-town and love it! I like homes with character (no cookie cutters please) and I like large lots with mature trees. I also enjoy my neighbors so much in my neighborhood. Crime rates are low and hospitality is high!

The quality of the homes in-town is better than in new developments, IMO. You can find an all brick home, updated, and with tons of character for a great price whereas it would cost double or even triple to replicate that home in a new development.

If you want the Southern small town feel, I say look at in-town homes. I feel more connected to my community living in-town and I've noticed that my in-town neighbors are also very civic minded.

That's my two cents worth... Good luck in your search!

I've only been here nine months, so maybe I am confused. The house we are buying is older (homes from the 70s-80s), the amount of land is decent (1/3 acre+) but it is in a development, but... in-town? You mean right near the historic district? We're near Old Trolley and Dorchester, so I guess we don't qualify?

In-town generally refers to in or near the historic district. My neighborhood has homes from the 1800's all the way through the 1960's. Each is unique with no dominant style or styles for the neighborhood. I have friends in a development off of Dorchester and their homes are lovely but are generally reflective of one decade. Their neighborhood was a planned development. Most in-town neighborhoods are more "organic" and have grown sort of naturally to their present size.

That's the best way I can describe the difference.

Default relocated to summerville

I am looking to relocate to Summerville in 10 months and found this thread helpful.
What areas would anyone recommend as far as older homes and neighborhoods to look at when visiting?
Also what running and cycling clubs would you recommend.
Your responses would be greatly appreciated.

anywhere within rock throwing distance of 5 points is "in town" ... lol

I live in Irongate on Trolly Rd. in an all brick house built on a nice lot with old growth trees... been here over 10 yrs and love it... I didn't want to be dead "in town" in the middle of the traffic hassels, that's one reason why I moved out of West Ashley yrs ago... but to each their own

I don't care for the newer developements either, no old growth big trees/shade and all cookie cutter houses that will be blown away the next big storm we have... mine lived through Hugo just fine...
