Default Both nice, just different

Our family likes both of them. Asheboro is very large and you will do a lot of walking. When my children were very young, we took strollers but with the heat and crowds we would usually not make it through the whole zoo. Now they love it- the attractions are very well done. Some of the animals are in simulated natural habitat enclosures and are sometimes difficult to get a good look at. We've been several times, though, and that hasn't been too big of a problem. It's a longer drive to Asheboro (from Union County, anyway) and there isn't anything else around the zoo. Riverbanks is great for those who want an easier walk. It's compact but also, lots of good exhibits. My sons participated in a scout overnight activity there a few years ago and the staff was terrific.

Asheboro for us is a whole day affair- the drive to and from and the size of the zoo. We usually eat at the zoo restaurant. Once we took a picnic lunch. Riverbanks is easier to do in just a few hours and then we either head back toward Charlotte to eat or eat somewhere in Columbia.

They're both very nice. If you've been to Asheboro, maybe you should check out Riverbanks.

NC Zoo is a safari zoo the animals probably more happy because they have more natural type habitat.
This is probably a good time to go (well when its mild) because the winter animals will be active but if you go to African side go in the 4D theater its a hoot and you will get wet but not much hehe..

I love the aviary exhibit too.

Riverbanks
is cool even has a botanical garden as well. It takes about an hour and half. The Toucans where beautiful. Here some photos of my recent trip http://www.city-data.com/forum/colum...oo-photos.html

Been to both....

can't speak for the animals since I haven't asked them....(I don't know which one they prefer.)

I prefer Riverbanks because its much more people friendly.....Walking the one at Asheboro is like walking the NYC marathon......

I prefer Asheboro because the animals have more room - I hate seeing animals in small cages! Even though I'm sure they're treated well. The walk at Asheboro really hasn't been an issue for us.
