I was just at the announcement at UNC Charlotte. Although its only 135 jobs, they are high paying and the governor hinted and bigger and better things to come with this partnership.
Kudos to our city, county, and state officials for this addition to Charlotte (they are moving from SC):
Mitsubishi Nuclear to add 135 jobs in Charlotte | CharlotteObserver.com & The Charlotte Observer Newspaper (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/05/31/2339896/mitsubishi-nuclear-to-add-135.html - broken link)
What caught my eye is more tax money being handed to a very rich corporation. The Gubnor is very ready to hand out corporate welfare in a state that is technically bankrupt.
Never the less, the very horrible continuing and worsening nuclear disaster at the Fukushima nuclear complex is going to spell the death knell of the nuclear plant industry. The US corporate media is completely ignoring the Fukushima mess, yet it is becoming worse than Chernobyl. Germany, the largest economy in the EU just voted this week to shutdown all its nuclear reactors by 2022, and halted construction of any new ones.
I also get upset with the idea of giving tax dollars to companies but that's not what is happening here. I think no matter how you spin it this is good for Charlotte

Money hand outs to corporations who bring local jobs are investments for local economy. Especially when attracting high skilled jobs in the area will benefit everybody.
The Japanese nuclear disaster has nothing to do with 99.9% of the other nuclear sites in the rest of the world. If you follow German politics, you'd know that Angela Merkel (German chancellor) just nine months ago was proposing an extra 12 years life extension of nuclear plants. It is a political move to make up for lost ground of her party popularity. The proposed 11 years closure of over 20% of energy supply is unachievable.
For this to happen, new polluting coal and gas plants need to be built, and import more than 10% from France (who is mainly nuclear ). About 14 years ago, Germans had the same political game (stop nuclear power) which never materialized for obvious reason.
You don't have to like it, but nuclear power is still the cheapest while non-poluting (no air contaminants) energy supply available.

Please provide some proof this actually happens. So far, the state has been batting a big 0 with these deals starting with the $200M given to Google, and the closure of the Dell plant that got tens of millions as well. The government can't buy it's way to recovery by taxing people and handing it over to corporations, especially foreign ones. BTW, Mitusubushi is only planning to bring 27 jobs/year for this big handout.
Ask the Japanese what the cost of nuclear power might be. I don't think you will get the same answer. (and they are highly dependent upon it)

All states offer incentives to get jobs. As the Gubnor has said, when all the other states stop giving them, NC can stop too. Until then, you pay to play. South Carolina, one of our biggest competitors, is notorious for the deals they give out...
So . . . we are to celebrate b/c a company is coming here and using our natural resources but most likely won't hire 1 person who actually already lives here - at least, for the high paying jobs. Maybe they will hire a local security guard or two and some clerical types . . . but the chances are high that no one they hire will be living in Charlotte right now.
Tell me how that helps our high unemployment.
Not impressed.
