I agree the gov't shouldn't be as concerned with kids' lunches, but the rules are really there to protect the most vulnerable. It was horrifying what some of my kids would come to school with, food-wise, and many were malnourished. The problem arises when people take things too far and decide that Anna's lunch of ham sandwich, juice and grapes isn't healthy enough. The focus should be on the kids whose parents either can't afford to provide proper nutrition or are too stupid to feed their kids properly. (I.e. Twinkie and Coke)
Agree, the rules are to protect the kids that are neglected or malnourished by their parents.
Best way to make everything better, it is to educate the little ones about nutritional value of foods from young age - too late for many parents or talk-show hosts

Actually the USDA wanted tomato paste as well as French fries unclassified as veggies. It was all those dietitians in Congress who decided pizza was a veggie.
