You might want to drive down to Greenville-Spartanburg. Fares on Southwest right now (there's a sale) are like $290 roundtrip, I just threw in the dates from Sept 19 to 23, and that's what it found. Other combinations, who knows, might be a little lower. Also, little traffic and not much hassle parking. I think it's probably closer than Raleigh, too.
Always check for flight prices around Tuesday afternoon. That is when they are generally the cheapest. I just booked a flight from CLT to PHX for mid August for under $300 (although it is not direct). Good luck.
Keep checking, I found a flight to PHX in Sept for $223.00....which is extremely low, I did not book it and lost it though. But I just saw it for $330.00 yesterday.Flights to Phoenix in my opinion have always been pricey by but $550.00 is extreme. I paid $396.00 over the holidays this year and that was crazy, but I justified it bc it was the holiday. Keep looking!
It seems to me like there are less "deals" when you book further out. My wife books all our travel and always comments that it is cheaper if you wait until a little bit closer. Not next day, mind you. I guess until the date is much closer, they don't worry about filling seats.
F.Y.I. Part of the reason flights to Phoenix are expensive is that the snowbirds and others who live in cold climates begin making their way back to the valley for the winter. Hotels, resorts and the like raise their rates as we get an influx of tourists who want to experience the state during the milder (it can still get pretty warm, though!) temps. Keep searching because there's a deal out there somewhere.
Will you be looking at houses/neighborhoods when you visit?

It is always a risk but this is what I have found as well. It is completely based on supply/demand so if there are alot of empty seats the closer to the date, that is when they go down in price. I have always found my best deals about 3-4 weeks out.
I fly pretty regularly and just got back from Phoenix where I was able to book USAIRWays direct from Charlotte for about $450.00. I have found booking out of Greensboro or Greenville, SC which flys right into CLT and will send you out on the same flight that cost you $550.00 to be much lower.
Doesn't make sense but thats the way it is. I had a friend drive me to Greenville and then get off the last leg at CLT on my return flight and not take the CLT - GSP leg.
Don't try that if you've checked a bag. The bag will still go to GSP.
USAir I just got $495 non-stop leaving Thursday coming back Sunday I entered 9/6-9/9
Delta with one stop is coming up $287 for the same dates
say you shift and take Friday to Monday with 1 stop on Delta I came up with $278 it is also $278 on American and the number of flight options at this price is higher
*UPDATE* - Bit the bullet this morning and purchased our airline tickets going to Phoenix. I think I got a pretty awesome deal. Went with Delta Airlines, but will have to connect.*sigh*. Don't really like connecting, but for $250 round-trip, I'll suck it up.

I always appreciate it when an OP updates their thread
Have a great trip - you did get an awesome fare there!
