I'm guessing 4-5 years will be the headline sentence and most people will be appeased. He'll serve 18 months of it and be fined a token amount.

I keep hearing "why did he do it for so little money?" The answer is he didn't. The headlines and charges are only for the crimes where there is rock solid evidence. There's probably 20 or more actual crimes committed for every one where a solid case that be built. In the grand scheme of things, he probably raked in 7 figures during the years his corruption was ongoing.

I think many of us would think twice about a life crime if the take was 7 figures and the penalty was 18 months low security. Unfortunately, he will have a pretty good campaign fund waiting for his 2017 reelection (do you call it that since its consecutive mayoral elections?!?) bid.

Maybe I'm wrong, but for certain very specific situations where I don't think Cannon would qualify, there isn't any parole for federal crimes. If he gets 4 years, then he has to serve 4 years.

The only way out would be if pardoned by Obama or future president or there is a re-trial where the term is reduced. Since he took a plea, that probably won't happen.

Look it Skilling from Enron. Got 24 years but they later found a procedural error. He's now scheduled to be released in 2017. There is always a loophole for a politically connected person with cash on hand.

It looks like he's only going to have to forfeit the $50k he took from the FBI and $8k in cash they found in his house. Everything else is profit, free and clear. Maybe the IRS could still get him for tax evasion but I doubt there's any push for that. The IRS goes after right wing reformists not left wing crooks.

^I did look it up. He went back to court and got his sentence reduced because the court ruled the original sentence didn't comply with federal guidelines. It's wasn't parole. He still has to serve 14 years.

Except for the massive fine he is going to have to pay, you act like this guy is rolling in cash, he isn't, if he was his wife would not have to run and find another job with a new real estate agency right quick.

The IRS doesn't care - they did and have historically targeted liberal groups as well (see NAACP). However, when your organizational theme screams tax avoidance or revolt its like blood in the water. I joke but always tease my outspoken conservative comrades, welcome to the party pal and first step towards really knowing how it feels to be Black (...marked for no damn reason).

Cannon will not spend more than 2 years in club fed after he becomes lead informant.

Ray Nagin hit the jail bingo party in New Orleans and got 10 years today! This may be Patrick's magic number too.

Yeah and he'll probably be sent to Butner where old Madoff is loving his high-end Mimi apartment. Lol. With b-ball, tennis and the whole 9......

Judge just gave Cannon 44 months.
Not long enough in my opinion but I am sure 3.6 years in prison is not going to be fun.

He showed up late for the sentencing. Maybe not the best tactical move. LOL
