I was reading the Union County Weekly today and some school enrollment #'s were printed....pretty interesting:

UCPS enrollment lower than expected, so far
Final UCPS enrollment numbers won’t be in till next week, but at the 20-day mark on Sept. 22, Union County Public Schools had 39,366 students, 212 fewer than the projected 39,578.

“You can still see fairly substantial growth,” Superintendent Ed Davis said, noting that the district grew by 812 students since last year’s 20-day mark, when it tallied 38,554 students. The year ended with 38,612 students, he said.

The county and state use the higher attendance number of the 20th or 40th days of school to determine funding. The 40th day of school was Oct. 20, but that tally wasn’t available by press time.

If districts over-project enrollment, they typically must return money to the state. This year’s amount may be available next week. Last year, UCPS’s projection was off by 1,000 students, so it had to revert $2.4 million.

Looks like school enrollment grew by about roughly 2%. More people still coming in fighting for less jobs...pretty interesting I thought.

Did the article specify if it was new residents or existing residents whose children entered school for the first time?

My daughter's past kindergarten teacher, at Weddington Elem., was moved to a different UCPS school because they did not have the enrollment required for a full classroom there. So I believe it. I think with the fallout from the housing bubble, the growth has halted somewhat. New developments that were going to be built, stopped, at least where I live.

That's a good question and I'd be curious to know the answer to that.

However though, just by the numbers there are more kids in the school system than last year.

Many people move to NC for the quality of life when raising kids - UC being a great choice because of the schools. I would guess that many (of those many) moved with kids under 5. So, I would expect that school enrollment would continue a marginal increase over the next several years even with just the folks who are already there.

I would be interested in home sales in UC more than school growth to find out if more are moving to UC.

There are SO many homes for sale near me.

That mid to high price point (~4-800k) is in big trouble and no clue how they're going to move that inventory...

400 - 500k - 193 properties
501 - 600k - 92 properties
601 - 700k - 73 properties
701 - 800k - 70 properties

Sub 400 I didn't even bother searching because carolinahome caps at 200 per query. There's easily over 1,000 homes for sale in UC.
