Regardless of the airports, coming from Charlottesville, you may find Raleigh-Durham a better choice. Charlotte is too Bible belt and conservative and educational attainment is not what it is in Raleigh-Durham. Chapel Hill has a good school system. Avoid Durham. It is more ghetto. I no longer live in Charlotte. I wanted to get out of the Bible belt.

...but that balance could be easily toppled if we keep growing and it'll be hell to play catch up after we all start getting frustrated with an inadequate airport.
They are already having problems already with parking. Every week, if I get home on Thursday or Friday night, I see a massive backup of people trying to get out of the daily lot. I sat in that once - took 15-20 minutes to get out of there. If you've been on the road all week, that's the last thing you want to deal with when you finally get home.
Umm, I'm late to this thread. But hands down Charlotte is the better location for air travel. Our airport has many...many...more direct flights than Raleigh. Its not even close. We're actually one of the busiest airports in the world.
I have to agree with Carolina Blue on this one. I love living in Raleigh (I like Charlotte too by the way) but if I had a lot of flying to do I would prefer CLT airport. Not that RDU is horrible but Charlotte does have way more direct flights which make for much better options if you are flying all the time.
