Hi. Posting on Alabama site trying to decide if Chattanooga or Huntsville is a better fit.

What are cool local towns in Chatta? I've heard of St. Elmo's...but is there a lot of crime there, and is it kid friendly?

We need: nice neighborhood (up and coming is fine, as long as its coming) walkability, good schools for little ones, don't have to get in the car to go out for a dinner or a coffee...

We'll go suburbia if we can't find a good small town feel somewhere around Chattanooga...mostly for the kids.

Thank you!

St Elmo is VERY cool if you love old houses but I am not sure how family-friendly it is so I cannot give my opinion on that one. It is a "walkable" area but there is pretty much only one spot that has eateries and such. The North Shore/North Chattanooga area is a bit more established on the revitalization chain thus more expensive but has just about everything you are looking for. VERY family/pet friendly. Check out Coolidge Park on the web. We have outdoor movies, summer water fountain, symphony night, Riverbend etc. Nice cafes and quaint little shops. Good schools. It's an amazing place to live. We live on the other side of town and travel over that way all year for one event or another.

Okay, If you don't mind driving 30 mins to Chatt maybe check out Athens or Decatur. Also Chattanooga Valley is nice. Lookout Mountain is very beautiful and old fashioned and it looks over Chattanooga, so you would have a view. The only thing though is Lookout Mtn. doesn't have too much on the restaurant scene.

IMHO you can't beat N Chatt for all the above reasons.

St Elmo does have a fun public park that was recently built. You can find it right on St Elmo Avenue
