We are moving to Chicago during summer. My husband will be working in Loyola Medical Center in Maywood. I have a daughter who will be going into 2nd grade. Can you please help me find the top ranking elementary schools close to Loyola. Thank you in advance!!

What's your definition of close?

The closest individual school that has been recognized by the Illinois Honor Roll for Academic Excellence would probably be in Oak Park or Riverside. I would suggest seeking out a district that has a full range of elementary schools, and middle schools so recognized. I would suggest that Western Springs would be the closest to Loyola Medical Center: Illinois Honor Roll - Academic Excellence Awards 2011 List

My definition of close is about 10 to 15 miles. Like to be closer to Chicago.

The general pattern of development in the train centric suburbs like Western Springs is rather similar to the suburbs like Oak Park which lie north of Maywood -- a majority of single family homes that mostly within walking distance of shops & resturants around the train station. The likelihood of having a significantly easy drive to work or shorter commute via rail for a family with school age children likely to be doing things near the periods of heavy traffic are so slim as to be nonexistent.

Should choose to live inside Chicago the drive to work would actually be longer and the difficulty in securing a place in any of the desirable selective admissions schools of CPS really leave you to choose only among the towns already mentioned.

Western Springs is probably about 7 miles, Hinsdsle maybe 10 miles. Oak Park is probably less than 5.

I believe Skinner is south / west of the Loop. I think it's selective admissions period has passed. It is about 10 miles from Loyola Medical Center.

Any other options for schools? We still haven't looked for houses. We want to stay closer to Chicago. Our rent affordability is $2000. Do you think we will get 3 bedroom and 21/2 bath houses for that price range if we live in the loop?

Default Unlikely...

There are essentially no single family detached houses "in the Loop", and even venturing into the South Loop or West Loop the odds a 3 br/ 2&1/2 ba condo renting for $2000 is not great.

The lowest cost are with a top rated school is probably still the Hollywood portion of Brookfield.
