If you just bought your house you take your appraisal and appeal it with the county. Did you check out how much the taxes were going to be when you bought the place? Would have been a really good idea.

Yes I did. However, it's a very long story that I can't really get into detail on here.

Contact your Township Office. Our Township Office offers walk in assistance with making sure your tax bill is correct, help in appealing and making sure you are receiving any exemptions you are entitled to.

Federal taxes were significantly higher 50 yrs ago. Plus the feds had more programs then.

Healthcare expenses (Medicare and Medicaid) were significantly lower.

Totally untrue. Social Security tax rates were lower, income tax rates were lower for the middle class, etc.

In 1955, the lowest Federal income tax bracket was 20%, the highest was 91%

In 2011, the lowest Federal income tax bracket is 10%, the highest is 35%.

Rates without information about exemptions are highly misleading. There are significantly fewer deductions and adjustments than there were in previous decades -- there were almost certainly no sane individuals that paid 90% tax back when even simple consumer debt payments were deductible: want lower tax bill, finance a fancy car.

These days even legitimate business expenses are highly constrained by the relatively harsh tax code.

True, used to be able to write off credit card interest.
