$420,000 is honestly a very sparse budget for Hinsdale. There are plenty of democrats and open minded types there but in all honesty the loudest in your face contingent tend to be the conservative republican types. I don't think I ever saw a subaru forrester when I lived there. If you are thinking west burbs I would take a very close look at LaGrange. Great downtown with lots of options. Very good train service and you can always drive to the city on Ogden when all else fails. I lived in Hinsdale and if I ever moved back to Chicago I would likely move to Lagrange instead of back to Hinsdale.

Pretty much a rule of thumb in Chicago: NORTH is always better! The further north, the better off you are.

What a stupid comment. I wouldn't trade most west suburbs for Des Plaines, Carpentersville, Cary, Round Lake Beach, Antioch, Waukegan, Zion etc. etc. ever. Hinsdale, W.S. Naperville, Wheaton, Oak Brook, are all better, you can throw in Orland Park, Palos, Frankfort and Mokena as well.

It was an over generalization. However, Orland park, Palos, Frankfort and Mokena are SW or S suburbs in my mind, not western suburbs. And your mix of towns listed is odd. Cary, Antioch and even most of Des Plaines don't belong with the others mentioned.

I am buying in the SW burbs with a similar budget to yours, but if it wasn't for my job, I would definately choose Highland Park or other North Shore areas. That said, I don't think that places like Northbrook compare to the georgeous towns along the lake like Highland Park, Goencoe, Wilmette, etc. Northbrook just feels like any other burb to me with its endless malls. Even though the aforementioned North shore burbs are very pricey, you can get a decent place in areas of Highland park for around 420 if you look hard.
