What makes it bad? Is it worse than Philly, Baltimore or New York?

My office will be near the Greyhound bus station. So I would only have to travel 8 hours in any direction from Chicago. I will be in charge of half of the central time zone so roughly the top half. I heard that living in the city isn't bad also but picking the right area is key. I would love to hear some great neighborhoods. Lincoln park and Hyde park have already been mentioned.

The funny thing about this user name is that Al Bundy on Married with Children lived in a Chicago suburb, Schaumburg.

No he is not. But when a poster with many rep points, who typically articulates their thoughts, gets "scolded" from a newbie with almost no rep points who made a rather unproductive post that does more to flame instead of create a discussion, then I say the criticism you received was deserved.
Frequent long term posters are interested in providing advice and/or interesting discussions. Did your post contribute in either way?

I guarantee the responses to your style of posting will be the same no matter which city's forum you decide to grace with your presence, Al.

How far West? It matters in Chicago.

Given you need proximity to O'Hare, expressways and perhaps the Metra and want a safe neighborhood with good schools, I am thinking Elk Grove, Mt. Prospect or Arlington Hts.

There are lots of lovely areas in the city. $1600/mo does not buy you much in Lincoln Park. How old are the children? Does your spouce/partner work?

Thats fine you can have your opinion but you need to contribute. What makes it a bad place? Where did you live, specifically, and for how long? What did you do for work?
