Hi we are moving to chicago from a different state, my husband got a job in North chicago. We want to live somewhere clean and safe, but lake forest is a bit expensive. Can anyone recommend a nice area 5 to 10 minutes from north chicago that would be nicer then waukegan or north chicago?

Gurnee is a good option. There are a few good pockets of Waukegan but not many.

5-10 minutes is too restrictive. Go out to 20 and you have far more options. Gurnee, Grayslake, Wadsworth, North Libertyville.

agreed most of Waukegan and North Chicago are ghetto. Immediately south is too ritzy. Due north isn't much better until you get into Wisconsin. Most of the decent places are out west like Gurnee, Libertyville etc. You could even live in Kenosha and take the train in Metra UP-N.

What's your budget? Lake Bluff and Libertyville are a bit less expensive than Lake Forest but Gurnee is much more affordable. Vernon Hills is in between and that coukd also be a place to look depending in your budget.

I heard gurnee has high crime and is not on the train route, is this true? Also, what are the racial demographics like in vernon hills?

Gurnee is a nice middle class subburb though it is not on the Metra UP-N. It is too far west so you would need to drive. Whoever told you that must be confused with North Chicago or Waukegan.

No offense but some of this is an easy Google. For example... Metra Mobile

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernon_Hills,_Illinois

VH is an upper-middle class suburb. Predominantly white with Asian and Latino a distant 2nd and 3rd.

I think they mean the suburb because they mentioned Lake Forest and Waukegan which is not 5-10 minutes from Chicago

That's right. North Chicago is about 50 km north of Howard Street. It does have a Metra station but any decent suburb along that line is too expensive. Nothing within ten minutes, closest probably Libertyville or Gurnee. Gurnee has a high crime rate due to the mall and theme park, but is safe for residents.
