By the way, I see a number of lots for sale in Winfield on Zillow, if you're interested in building from scratch.

I was born in Alexandria, and lived for about a decade as an adult in Virginia and North Carolina, and in defense of the drivers there, they don't see a lot of snow there. Depending on the area, they may not see any at all in a given year. When a couple of inches would be forecast in the Raleigh-Durham area, people would panic and strip the shelves at the grocery store. A lot of these towns in the south don't have a lot of snow removal equipment or salt to put down because they don't need them that often.

Snow I can see them panicking. But rain? Its rainier in VA than IL, they should be VERY accustomed to driving in it.

This is true. They usually don't get as much snow here and there are also so many "new" drivers from other countries. Also, we have a lot of families living in the mountains as this county is so large. But it seems like they get enough snow to warrant purchasing more equipment. But when they cancel school for less than an inch of snow, or just the THREAT of snow, man, that gets old. The blizzard this winter was interesting!

Ha - right? I don't understand why traffic just shuts down with a tiny bit of rain. I understand being cautious for conditions but it's a strange thing to experience.

Anyway - thanks for the input and tips!

The politicians thinking I suspect runs along these lines: "Let's see, there's a five percent chance of a crippling snowstorm before my term is up, so there's no way I'm going to support giving the city money for more snow removal equipment that won't be needed while I"m in office."

Of course, I'm a cynic so ...
