Hello! I'm considering taking a job in Elk Grove Village, and ideally would like to live downtown. I will have to be at work by 7am each day, and will get off anywhere between 3pm and 5pm. Since I would be leaving the city by 6:15 or 6:30am, I am wondering how the commute would be at this hour??? Other postings have said it's about an hour drive during rush hour, but I'm assuming rush hour doesn't start this early... am I right? Thanks for your help in advance!

Do you NEED to live in the loop?

Traffic around the Circle Interchange in the morning is really, really nasty.

If you could find a place to live off of I-90 in the NW side, you could make it happen well enough.

There is no way that you, living in The Loop, could get to Elk Grove in 30 minutes.

Monday mornings the traffic to O'Hare might start that early. Another option you might consider, at least during bad weather, is the Blue Line to Rosemont, transferring to Bus 223. That, however, will take longer most days. Most days you should get there in a reasonable time at 6:00 A.M. One factor working against you is that the reversible lanes on the Kennedy go the opposite direction.

I used to do half this trip two or three summers ago.

I worked in Rosemont between Mannheim and River Road, and would be traveling from EGV (near 53 and Devon). I also would be on the road at around 6:20 am or so, and the entire trip would take about 20 - 30 minutes by car, more so depending on weather since traffic was always similar (light to medium).

The only thing I didn't foresee that would cause mayhem for me were the trains--of the three or so crossings I passed, only the Touhy Road crossing would cause delays (up to 15 minutes sometimes).

Getting BACK to EGV took longer, at around 3 pm or so it would always take at least 30 minutes (as opposed to 20 - 30 in the morning going to work).

The Touhy Avenue crossing is especially treacherous, with 20-30 freight trains a day, each lasting 5-10 minutes on average. The tollway is the best way to avoid this. The trip to the office is usually much faster than the trip home, this is true throughout the region.

Thanks everyone! I am considering living in Bucktown... with easy access to the highway and hitting the road by 6-6:15 am, people are telling me that I should get to work in Elk Grove Village by 7am without too much trouble.

If I decide to live in the suburbs, I hear Elk Grove Village may not be the best choice... I'm a 25 year old single female, which suburbs are my best options??

If you are single, Elk Grove can be boring. Schaumburg has a bit more night life.

None of the suburbs have a real nightlife. I supppose Evanston and Oak Park/River Forest are close, but nothing compared to the neighborhoods. Chicago is a bit unique in this respect as many metropolitan areas have nightlife located outside of the city, but here it is few and far between.

You could go even further NW than Bucktown and still be in the city and thus still reasonably close to nightlife. But Bucktown to EGV shouldn't be terrible. Even 45 minutes in the car isn't terrible considering the tradeoff of no nightlife in the burbs, yet only a 20 minute commute.
