Looking to move for the 3rd time in 5 years because of back luck with neighbor noise. Any good recommendations where I might be far enough from a neighbor not to hear them/see them? Don't want to be further than 20 mi. out from Naperville in any direction. Please don't tell me I'll have to buy a big house in an upscale neighborhood - already am and it got me nowhere. Money doesn't buy courtesy and respect (not for me anyway), but it will buy more land and trees to buffer me from the noise and chaos hopefully. I am a very respectful quiet person who is just looking for the same. Woods, ponds, etc. a giant plus. I am only 36 yrs. old - too young for the 55 and older community or I'd gladly look there!

I am married, no kids, no plans for kids. Don't mind isolation at all. The Naperville hub is only because of work / medical specialists.

You would still be stuck in suburbia 20 miles outside of Naperville regardless of the direction you travel.

If you want 'isolation' you can probably find some places around Big Rock that'll fill the bill. You'd be about 20 miles west of Naperville. The 'nature' might be mostly agriculture, but the farms were being split up for housing for a long time, though lack of rail service and the slow down in new construction has put the brakes of that...

Good Luck!

If you are willing to extend your geographic limits to 25 miles or so, you can find what you are looking for around Kaneville or Big Rock, or maybe Elburn.

I will say however, though if you are single, with no kids it can feel a bit socially isolating since most people who are not married in that age bracket aren't going to want to live out there.

We live in sugar grove and have excellent access to I88. There is a wide variety of housing available. The area we live in is older, as we have been here over 20 years. the lots are approx 1/2 acre in size. There is the aurora airport, but it is not like jets are flying in all the time! there is also train tracks. The village has instituted quiet zones at the Dugan Road Crossing and Main Street Crossing. this has been a great thing. Our neighborhood is pretty quiet, there are kids, but they aren't running wild and screaming all of the time! there are homes for sale in the area. they are around the 265-300thousand range. Oh, there is a pond, large trees, farm fields etc. the drive to naperville from our house is less than 30 minutes.

Oswego, montgomery, plano, or the outskirts of aurora should get you something decent.

Default Quiet

You don't necessarily have to move all the way out to Elburn or further to have privacy. In Naperville many of the unincorporated neighborhoods have plenty of privacy and very large yards. This will also make your taxes hgher but the homes tend to be priced relatively low compared to Naperville standards. Only downside is no sidewalks and possibly well water though I think most of them have city water now.

If you go out to Big Rock or further you will have privacy. I tend to think Elburn, Yorkville and a few other people mentioned seem like private now however just as Oswego used to be remote now its a big suburb, same thing is going to happen with Elburn and Yorkvile nad years down teh road further than that will be sprawl.

Id look out in the countryside somewhere, say, near Virgil or something. We have a friend out in that area who has a nice, big, new ranch home on a few acres. At night, you can see every star, hear all the coyotes and owls, yet still be close enough to see your neighbors. Its a quick 10 minutes to Geneva/St. Charles, and all the people out there just seem so friendly. One night someone's horses got out, and a kid (not more than 20 yrs old) pulled into the driveway at midnight and offered his help to gather the horses. Luckily they werent our friends' horses, but the neighbors. There were a few people from the area who helped drive around and find the stray horses. Just a great sense of community out that way, I was astonished.

If you move into the country you could trade neighbor noise for agricultural noise... if you have ever lived next to a neighbor with a rooster practically right on top of your house... you would KNOW what I am talking about. Just for the record, Kane county has inappropriate zoning that allows this. To be far enough away from your neighbors to not be impacted by their noises and smells, you would need minimum 2-3 acres. That is expensive. My suggestion, to move out west in the Fox river valley area, but make sure you are near forest preserves. BUT check the zoning carefully, esp. if it is F zoned (call the county zoning dept) before you move into a subdivision to see if you can deal with what could be allowed next door that will affect your quality of life and property values.

So you cannot know what you are in for in regards to neighbor noise. Personally I would move into a development with a VERY strict HOA if you are worried about getting a bad neighbor.

We moved from the city to get away from NFH onto a 1 acre lot. We have a worse NFH and have found that 1 acre is NOT large enough to get away from smells and noises that a bad neighbor will create.

Sure do appreciate the replies. I am actually close to the Fox River now in one of the mentioned cities in the south/west suburbs, but in a typical residential area. A strict HOA would actually be perfect for us because it would probably help us so much more.

If only there were communities for like-minded people, not just age-restrictions. I haven't worked out the rest of the logistics on that yet.
