I remember when Manigault posted some peaceful pictures of Englewood. I agree that looks can be very deceiving.

Though, can someone find some peaceful pictures of Gary IN?

Sure. There are million+ dollar homes in Miller Beach:

Now, if million-dollar homes sound pricey for Gary even if they're on the beach, consider that the same homes would probably be 5 to 10 million on the north shore. Seen in that light and knowing this area is isolated away from Gary's urban decay and the problems associated with it, they're actually quite the bargain. Property taxes are a bear though, as they often are in largely distressed cities.

I've lived there for 6 years and didn't even know anyone called it Belmont Gardens until last February when someone nearby had a house fire and the Trib referred to the neighborhood as Belmont Gardens. We're kind of sandwiched in between hoods here. Not really Logan Square, not really Hermosa, not really Avondale, not really Old Irving, not really Craigin, and on the wrong side of Belmont to be considered Kilbourn Park, but on the wrong side of Diversey to be considered Kelvyn Park. So yeah...Belmont Gardens. Just wondering where those gardens are located.

Yeah, sometimes people equate dangerous neighborhood with 'horrible blight' which isn't always the case. Many moons ago, I drove through neighborhoods in Jackson, MS that looked like they were straight out of Better Homes and Gardens, but were very high crime and unsafe.

The sad reality is, in spite of Olympia Fields, "Dangerous neighborhood" usually = "black neighborhood" and there are plenty of good, honest black folks who maintain their homes, mow their lawns, grow pretty gardens... They aren't the problem. It's what their 13-30 year old male children are doing in that neighborhood that makes it unlivable for decent folk. There are areas of Roseland that look nice, but are very dangerous. Hegewisch is deceiving like that, too. In the daytime, the areas away from the 'Old Hegewisch' section are *mostly* safe. At night, though, Hegewisch is totally unsafe... and that tells you all there is to know about ANY neighborhood. If you cannot take a midnight stroll without risking being attacked or accosted, that isn't a place you want to live.

Sadly, the Brandon Avenue slumminess is creeping outward and random crime events are happening more and more in the better parts of Hegewisch like Avalon Trains, east of Avenue O, etc. Then, there's the Hispanic Gang issue...

Spot On! I remember thinking that on my first trip to NYC. I thought I was in a bad area but turns out I was in a hip and trendy area. Now move that area into the midwest and it's ghetto and horrible. I happen to live in one of these areas in MKE and it's an old warehouse district and not all buildings are revived but you do hear from out of towners, is this safe.

Hegewisch is a very ordinary working class white neighborhood that looks more like neighboring Hammond, Indiana than it does Chicago.

Except that it's not a "white neighborhood" anymore, per the 2010 census data. That trend will only continue, and rapidly so...

I thought it unusual for a white girl to get gunned down in a gang drive-by. Then I found a picture of her on the interwebs in thugware and hangin' with cholos. Looks like perhaps she fell in with the wrong crowd.
