I would stay in a hostel, as it is very easy to meet other people there.

I'm not trying to sound nasty, but...are the hostels there mainly occupied with bums? (and I don't mean homeless people, I mean BUMS lol) Are the hostels in any way shady??

nope. I don't even think you can stay in most hostels if you're a resident of the city it's in, so the vast majority of people at a hostel are fellow travelers, not bums

I stayed at the hostel downtown when I came here for my school's orientation and to scout out apartments and it was a good experience. the place had internet, laundry, a kitchen, and, most importantly, plenty of people around my age to talk to (lots of other students there for orientation as well). yes, you'll have to share a room with a few other people, but I didn't find it that bad at all. the bathroom was a bit scuzzy though and there wasn't central air, but for <$100/night, I couldn't complain much (I think I may have paid <$50/night, can't quite remember). I would absolutely stay there again in needed

if you ever have the fortune to travel abroad, like most young people who do so, you'll likely be bunking in a hostel. you're at the age where you can tolerate it better than some elderly person (though I have seen older adults staying at hostels, and likely more are doing so during this recession). ignore the movies, good hostels are perfectly fine places for travelers on a budget to rest and talk w/ fellow travelers

What's the difference between a homeless person and a bum?

Are all bums homeless, but not all homeless bums?

IMHO a bum is not necessarily homeless, nor does homeless always indiciation of a bum. I know bums who wear $1000 dollar suits and have high paying jobs - but they don't seem to have any moral turpitude. On the other hand I know people who are homeless through circumstance not of their making that are very decent and kind individuals.
