The new sound of Chicago is very southern/trap rap influenced. Chief Keef and crew and all the young generation coming up aren't into the soulful/conscious hip-hop. This new sound of young gang-bangers really does represent what the Chicago youth have been 'into' especially this year.

Here's the thing, The street sound in chicago has always had similarities to the southern sound(but a little darker). The difference was that the south got popular first. Just listen to old twista, psychodrama, and crucial conflict. Its not that much different than this new sound except the new sound is more up to date.
That soulful sound like kanye and common and No-ID is what people think of when they hear chicago rap but the artista are very diverse.
