sounds like a major bonus

The Yelp reviewers suggest otherwise:

El Ranchito - Avondale - Chicago, IL

Taqueria El Ranchito - Avondale - Chicago, IL

Zacatecas gets better reviews, but IMO it blows - my Mexican friends wouldn't be caught dead in that place.

On the positive side, La Cocina is amazing

La Cocina Logan Square - Avondale - Chicago, IL

Can't say i've used yelp for anything other than seeing how bad some frat bar i'm being dragged to for a friend's birthday will suck. All i'm saying is lard plays a pretty prominent role in Mexican cooking.

The Mexican cooking many of us are used to, probably. But you can vote with your wallet and support places that serve healthier food. It tastes better, too.

Why do you always have to be polarizing like that??

A restaurant is a business. Any business wants more customers coming in and to grow.

Do you want Chicagos Mexican community to remain segregated?

As ethnic communities have been in an area for a couple generations there ethnic restaurants and institutions cater more and more to the general public, its just reality.

America should be a melting pot, not a mixed salad.

lard as well as leftover grease from the meat. The best tortilla chips for instance are fried in a mixture of corn oil and beef fat.

I'm white and I can't stand that liquid cheese crap. Los Angeles has crazy good mex food, that's because the deep culture of mexicans their thanks to cali's unenforced immigrant laws

I agree, for the most part 90% of it there is watered down and kitsch. And yes even though there are a lot of mexicans in Chicago, the Mexican in the border states is far far better. Not necessarily that there aren't a few great mexican spots in Chicago, but it's just a different scene, I have had a LOT of misses in Chicago in terms of mexican food. But I've also been through Mexico several times and lived in CA so I might have different tastes for it. You could drive around LA uncovering rocks and find a taco truck. They are allover parking lots, and way more of them.
