The commute would make me think twice and look for a suburb that is closer to Gurnee.
Renting would be a very smart choice until you could get a feel for your commute and likes and dislikes of an area.

Is Gurnee so terrible the OP should not live close to work and play elsewhere?

People who have never lived or worked in or anywhere near Chicago have no bloody concept of distance or time or weather. That normal easy breezy 20 minute trip in April can become 60 minutes or longer on ice and snow. The wear and tear on the vehicle adds up after a year or two. And it wears on the spirit. . .

It would NEVER take less than about 45 minutes to get from the extreme NW corner of Chicago to any point in Gurnee with employment, and that would be when roads are empty, early in morning / late at night. Normal rush hour would be about an hour in the AM and considerably longer in the PM. Travel times would grow not just in ice or snow but even relatively light rain and such.

Gurnee itself is not really unsafe, just fairly bland. The handful of local spots are more geared to lunch crowd and the even spots with a crowd in the evenings are not really targeting young professionals. Libertyville has more of that mix...

i agree with the above poster...If I had to live in the suburbs again I would look into Libertyville/Libertyville..Even Schamburg which is fairly close to Chicago, not a terrible commute to Gurnee but shorter than it would be from the North side of Chicago.

Chicago proper to Gurnee 5 days a week? I wouldn't last a month.

Doesn't anyone here live around Chicago?

This is a no-brainer -- don't do it. That flipping Edens expressway has the worst traffic patterns. Sometimes during rush hour it'll move through the Highland park, Glencoe areas, other (totally random and nonsensical) times, say 8:00 PM on a Tuesday it'll be bumper to bumper and you'll be better off walking.

It's a far drive to begin with, and add the crapshoot traffic patterns and you'll want to blow your brains out.

Don't do it.

At the very least stay in a hotel in your desired hood for a week and give that commute a dry run. I guarantee you'll be thinking of Plan B.
