So it's supposed to be special without being unique? Splitting semantic hairs a wee bit there, no?

My point was that if Chicago has a "special" relationship with Austin just because Chicago people like Austin, then every city, town, and census-designated place on Earth has a special relationship with Austin, because most people love Austin. New Zealand is nice, too, so I suppose we have a special relationship with them, as well.

Albuquerque has a closer relationship with Detroit. Chicago's special relationship is more with Las Cruces, or possibly Gallup.

The two best relationships that Chicago has would have to be Buford, Wyoming and definitely Moscow, Idaho.

I'm not! I'm stating that Chicago really loves the fourth largest city in the Idaho Panhandle!

We do. It's a special relationship. Not necessarily unique, but special.

i admit that i was a inarticulate with the initial post. i tried to keep it simple and not give examples because i was more interested in hearing what other had to say.

by special relationship, i meant things like Chicago's relationship with Milwaukee which is based on proximity or with St. Louis in the sense that Chicago and the primacy of rail replaced that city as the midwestern metropolis and its river trade. Chicago and New York have had a special relationship in many ways: skyscrapers, the link between the two ends of the transport created by the Erie Canal, etc. Chicago and Detroit had a relationship based on being the heavy industrial giants in the midwest. Chicago relates to Phoenix in the sense that so many Chicagoans have moved to that area to retire or have winter homes.

since that wasn't the direction the thread went and it has turned into a joke, i'm requesting that it be closed. as noted, i was inarticulate here, but there was nothing nasty or offensive in my OP which might warrant ridicule. And certainly asking for clarification or giving me the benefit of doubt would have made sense.

i would think you'd like to foster an environment that encourages sharing ideas and where dialogue is comfortable and civil. at least those are the ideas that lincix has made clear are the forum's goal.
