I've heard that the area around this train stop can be dangerous. Is it safe if you are only transferring trains to Skokie or Evanston? Is it always dangerous or just at night?

When people talk about dangerous, they're talking about the street level area around the stop, not the stop itself usually. So no, it's not going to really be that dangerous (and I don't even think the area around Howard is terribly dangerous either) if you're transferring on the same exact platform and not even going out onto the street.

Oh my god, these "is it safe" threads are so ridiculous. You don't even leave the platform dude. Jesus.

Isn't Howard one of the busiest transfer points in the CTA L system. Tens maybe a hundred of thousands of commuters are on those platforms daily and when was the last time an incident made the news? Even the neighborhood arround the station although it is no Lincoln Park is certainly not anywhere near as bad as Englewood or West Lawndale or Austin.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Howard stop. The only thing you have to worry about/see/deal with are homeless people (e.g. switching trains to run the Red line in the opposite direction), which is like every other public transit major transfer point in the country.

Seriously! People on this forum are afraid of their own shadow. The answer to the "Will I die?" question is "No, now calm the sh*t down."

The train stop is "safe" for switching trains and such. I would make an effort not to be riding CTA much after 8 p.m. alone if you are female (I am). It isn't "The Purge" but it does get sketchy in the late evening. The area around the train stop (off the platform) is "okay". My definition of "okay" is I would avoid it if possible but it isn't a war zone. Lots of section 8 mental illness types, so just stay alert (don't be drunk or texting).

YMMV. I am a young female who just doesn't like confrontations or violence so I stay in the nice areas of Chicago as much as possible.
