These days, when I walk through the city in the evenings, I hear a beautiful chorus of insects. I'm undecided as to whether they are cicadas, crickets, or both. I wanted to ask you guys, since I thought someone here might know. Which of the two am I hearing? (cicadas? crickets? or both?) When do they each appear?

Likely to be the annual cicadas. Much, much louder than any crickets I have met

If it goes chirp, pause, chirp, pause, it's a cricket. If it goes CHIIIIIIRRRRRRrrrrp it's a cicada.

It might be Katydids you're hearing.

Some species of frogs sound like bugs, too.
