Both of those are decent recs.

As far as areas but no specific rentals:
  • Rogers Park near Clark/Touhy (close to dog park, Red Line 'L' station and, if you work in the Loop/West Loop, a Metra station for a faster commute than the Red Line - depending on exactly where you lived and worked, it could easily cut your commute in half albeit it costs more). Can be nice to be close to Evanston for the nice movie theatre there and other shops in downtown Evanston, plus Northwestern's main campus, plus the 400 theatre on Sheridan Road just north of Loyola. Lots of basic shops for necessities on Clark, or groceries near Howard. Also relatively convenient to Devon Ave if you like Indian/South Asian foods.
  • Edgewater near Argyle or Berwyn. Nice to be close to the Lake and Argyle's Asian shops and Andersonville's vibrant streetscape along Clark a little west.
  • Eastern part of Albany Park near Foster and the River. Easy access to Lincoln Square. Has the least number of fast commute options, but you'll at least always get a seat on the Brown Line in the morning that far out. Nice access to Middle Eastern and other ethnic foods just west of there. Not terribly far from Andersonville and whatever few Korean places still exist near Foster and Kimball.
  • Norwood Park near Thorndale and Nina Ave (tough to find rentals, might find an inlaw apt for rent. Definitely the quietest location, very suburban feel, but at the intersection I listed, it'd be less than a 10 minute walk toe Blue Line Harlem and a dog park, and the UP-NW Norwood Park Metra station for speedy Loop commutes (but at an even higher cost than the Rogers Park Metra UP-N station)
  • If you were willing to venture south, Bronzeville near Michigan and 36th would meet all your other requirements - nearby dog park, walkable to Green Line 'L' station at 35th and the 35th St Metra Rock Island train (only really helpful if you work in the South Loop of central Loop.
  • Also south, Hyde Park east of the Metra tracks. Mac Apartments has some inexpensive but well-run vintage apartments around Cornell and 55th, which is a nice little area with restaurants and shops right there, and only a couple blocks from a Walgreens and a Treasure Island grocery store. The 6 express bus to the Loop is a good commute to the South Loop and central Loop. Metra Electric is a good commute to the East Loop. If you were at 55th and Cornell you wouldn't be close to the 'L' but the 6 express bus runs frequently, and you can take the 55 bus west to the Red or Green Lines, although it's not really necessary to do often between the express buses and Metra Electric. Not far from U of C and their cultural offerings, and the dog park near there is next to the Museum of Science and Industry.
