I am moving to 6602 North Ashland Ave (between W. Devon and W. Pratt, bordering to the south and north respectively). I plan to bring my car, but I also plan to take public transit (from the Loyola Metra station) into downtown for my summer 9-5.

How safe is the area, in your opinion? Which areas/blocks would you avoid? What types of experiences, good and bad, have you had in the area? Is getting by simply a matter of good old-fashioned common sense?

I am a 26 year old black female (law student) and like to think that I am street smart, but I also have never lived in a major American city (only experience was in London, UK for a few months). I grew up in Little Rock, AR. I have gotten worried because I've heard about the shootings in Rogers Park lately...help!

Pratt/Ashland has a lot of... undesirable activity.

I wouldn't imagine it should be a huge shock to you that, like every city, LR has good neighborhoods and bad.

Tough to say this on a block by block radius. Pratt/Ashland used to be quite worse and somewhat of an odd hot spot. There's others blocks that have been rough and not so rough over time. Do you mean the rogers park Metra? Or the Loyola Red Line Stop? Walking to the Metra along Clark St. should never really be a problem. I personally use and prefer the Metra. Walking to the Red Line I'd try and avoid commuting at night. Overall just use your "street smarts". Try your best to be smart and safe. On the plus side there is a nearby police station/salt warehouse if that does anything for you.

Note these are just my opinions and not to be taken as definitive or authoritative.

I don't recommend to anyone going around the area past touhy / rogers / ridge ( there's a fork in the road which goes downward). That part of Rogers isn't really safe to be around. Especially if you're on a bike and two black teenagers are following you.

Glad I sold my bike.

If you're not ready for it, I would stay south of Howard Street in Rogers Park.

You must be very special if two random black teenagers felt the need to follow you after you were spotted. Are you important maybe or just extremely attractive?

I'm neither important nor extremely attractive. I think they just wanted to rob me or take my bike. Like I said. I shouldn't have been wandering. Especially around that area.
