I did do a search but I'm looking for a conclusive answer. I've heard that going too far west can be dangerous. I'm looking at apartments near Western Ave. Is this too far west? Could I walk alone at say 8-9pm without carrying a can of mace? Is Humboldt park unsafe?

lot of questions, I know

Default Humboldt Park and Wicker Park

Wicker Park is about as safe as you are going to get.

Humboldt Park is not. I generally go running there, but I stick to the outside as I run at night. Also, it is exactly 2 miles around which is nice for my training. During the day you are probably okay, but I would not do it as a female by yourself.

Western Avenue is okay, but I would not go west of say Rockwell (2600W) if you are a single female without a big dog. Mace will not help you. You are better off to stay east of Western, but it is more expensive. North of Bloomingdale (1800N) is pretty decent all the way to say Kedzie (3200W).

Generally, if you stay on major streets such as North Avenue you will be fine, even as far west as Humboldt Park. Just keep your wits about you and use common sense and you will be fine.

I've never had any issues in my neighborhood. But, I have an awareness that raises my guard here. Especially at night when I'm not in the "popular" areas.

Wicker Park is still less safe than more solidly-gentrified neighborhoods like Lakeview and Lincoln Park. But it's definitely on the safer side of Chicago neighborhoods.

Wicker Park is definately safe (as is UK Village & East Village). Even some spots bet. Western & California are safe, but it is in pockets (and if you're west of Western, dont go south of Grand, the scenery gets dicey FAST). The main corridors through Wicker Park, namely North & Division, are safe all the way to Washtenaw (2700W)

Hmm. I'm at Walton & Washtenaw (just about midway between Division & Chicago) and i haven't had one problem. Sure, there is the smaller issues you'll find anywhere (some car break ins and the first assault i've heard about in the nearly one year that i've lived here) but it is the same as what i've experienced in East Village (which is east of damen)...

I know where East Ukrainian Village is.

I disagree that is all I said. I am glad you have not encountered any problems.
