Lots of great areas near the Loop/dt. I don't have a great idea about rental prices now since I've owned for some years. I suppose a lot depends on what you want to pay, and what your interest is. Hyde Park/U of C area is great. Lots of appartments, very diverse, and only about twenty minutes by train to down town. North side you have generally your whole lake front area, inland there are some great areas also. I suppose your best bet is to come here and look around. Ask here again before you come and you can get more ideas.

As many said, you can get a 600 sq foot 1 br for under or around 1000 easy in many desireable neighborhoods, even walking to work locations..go up about 100 for another 100 sq foot usually, often in all or mostly inclusive buildings.

In Brentwood I paid about $1000 a month for a smaller one bedroom. It really depends a lot on what you are paying now and where you want to live in Chicago. You also have to factor in parking -- if you don't want to do street parking, set aside around $150 a month to pay for a parking spot. The best thing about Chicago, though, is very little driving is necessary. You can walk and train it everywhere.
What was the specific neighborhood in Old Town where you live? I am looking at spending around $2,200 monthly for a two bedroom in the area.
Is that realistic for a COOL pad? I am only going to be living in Chicago for about a year, but want something comfortable. From what I have looked at online it seems very reasonable compared to Boulder. My dad will help me above 2k if needed, but I would prefer taking care of it myself.

2K should get you a nice comfy pad.
