Because a person sitting at home with a shotgun has volition and human judgment about whether it's really appropriate to pull the trigger. A booby trap doesn't.

I recall having read that the last man who was hanged in Illinois had booby trapped a melon patch with a spring gun that killed two children.

I live in a 3-steps-down garden in Logan Square. no bars, and the front gate doesn't lock, and I feel perfectly safe.

I lived in one in Bucktown with no problems. My windows were long and narrow so it would be hard for someone to break in. I never worried about it.

That makes sense. I was thinking of more like some entrapment/sting situation, where the frat boys leave the window slightly open an place a Cannondale bike or something there, very visibly, and then when the gangbanger breaks in, pound the living daylights of him.

As long as the frat boys are the actual actors and not a machine that can't distinguish between a robber and a firefighter, then the intruder is fair game.

Yes, that is very clear.

How many windows does it have ? What type of windows ?

The windows would be the only thing I would consider if you live alone and are at work all day , if someone is always there then I would not worry.Or get a large dog if you can.

I seen windows on a garden apartment years ago covered in barb wire , that might be an cheap alternative to bars or an alarm.

That is why I always rent 2nd or higher floors.
