I wasn't around for any of this . The Chicago I was born into looks pretty much the same as it does now. Boring, I know. I wish I could have seen a Chicago without expressways...Oh well.

One more thing about gone...
my last job in Chicago, as graphic designer for Montgomery Ward, in the corporate office, on the 17th floor, at Chicago and Larabee.
Good ole Wards gave up the ghost right after Christmas, 2000.
Speaking of mail order catalog giants, a gone but not forgotten Chicago thread wouldn't be complete without Aldens, god rest its soul. My dad worked there for many years.

It was a victim of the shopping malls that started popping up everywhere in the '70s. Wicks bought it in the '70s and it closed for good in '81 or '82 as I recall.

You must be pretty young. I remember it.

They finished straightening the northbound side in 1985 and the southbound side in 1986.

Even though it was not a Chicago specific company, one of the places I miss is Woolworth's. Especially the lunch counter's.

I miss the Milford theater. (The reason it was called this is because it was at the intersection of Milwaukee and Crawford which was later named Pulaski of course.)

I also miss the Gateway theater (I saw The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi at this theater) even though the building still exists in a form as the Polish community's Copernicus Center.

Chicago once had hundreds of theaters. This site http://cinematreasures.org/search/query=chicago&search=city&method=n&show=all (broken link)
has over 500 listed! It is a shame. These places used to help hold together neighborhoods. Now we probably have about 40 or so that function in some form in the arts still, still stand and used in another capacity, or are just begging to be rehabbed and reopened.

Yeah, Goldblatts sold real good pound cake and cheap too. To get you in the store I guess.

I remember the Sears store on the West Side on Homan. They used to have a candy and cookie counter, my Old Man would always get a bag of bridge mix.

Back when Kuppenheimer made nice men's clothing here in Chicago they'd have a sale once a year at their factory over near the Sears, guys would be lined up outside. My Old Man would buy a couple of sports jackets there every year.

I moved to Chicago in 1992 so most of this is ancient history to me. Still pretty interesting thread to read.
