Dubai was dumb. I think their decision for every building went something like this:

"We finally have money from all the oil, let's go build a lot of skyscrapers that we don't need and can't possibly fill!"

I can't say that I'm sad.

Chicago can manage one building, we wont pull a Dubai and try to completely change ou skyline in 10 years and go bankrupt.

Yeah, and it's really put us lower on the height list because of that one decade of no activity... =(

Hah, good one OmShahi.

Is anyone else a little concerned about its shape? I'm all for having the tallest skyscraper here, but that thing looks like a vibrator .

Luckily not at that scale, but we definitely have not been immune to stalled highrise construction projects (Waterview Tower), not to mention the thousands of luxury highrise condos that have been completed over the past couple of years but now sit empty. I'm not sure how many developers have went bankrupt, but plenty of developers and investors are definitely feeling the pain and may still go bankrupt as they are having to pay carrying costs for all these units no one is buying.

I think we've seen that there just isn't as big a market for the $500k 1BR price-range condos in Chicago as has been built for. So I just don't see this thing going up anytime soon - and if someone does move forward with it they would likely go bankrupt or at least take massive losses doing so.

Some news that fell under the radar this month:

"Irish developer Garrett Kelleher’s company has lost control of the site on which he expected to build the Chicago Spire."
