I'm wondering how much more people are willing to pay for in-unit washers and dryers, opposed to just having it in the building (coin-operated in basement). Does this add a lot to rental prices?

Also, is $1400/month for a 1,500 sqft 2br 1bath w/ heat and one garage spot included too expensive for the UK Village (the place is mid range, not new, but not old and crappy)?

It depends where in Ukrainian Village. It closer to Wicker Park, it is more reasonable than if near Western Avenue or the United Center. I still think it's pretty expensive if near Wicker Park or near the River, but consider you have 1,500 square feet and parking. In unit washer/dryer is huge because most places charge $1.00 per load for each machine. That can easily add up to $25 per month and you don't have to pay electric/water on it.

I'm a guy that does it once a week, generally 3 loads. That's $18 per month. If you have a spouse, double it.

I think that price seems about right for that area for that amount of space. Maybe you could get something cheaper in the western part of UK Village though (far from the Blue Line).

As far as in unit W/D goes, I would probably pay a bit extra for it - maybe $50/month. Although, it also depends on the location if it’s shared facilities. A bit of a difference between the facilities being just outside of your door and schlepping up 3 flights of stairs to do laundry.

All but one of the apartments in Chicago that I have lived in had an in-unit W/D. Seems to be pretty common in the Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village area, so it should not be that hard to find if you want it. The only place I lived in with shared W/D was in Lakeview.
