Well I see you tend to spiritualize what the literalists prefer to keep literal so they may see it different from you.
Absolutely. The purpose of the Christian life is not to look to the outward, natural world for guidance, but to abide in Him and keep our eyes focused on what He's doing within to conform into His image.
If I'm not mistaken, the bible is a spiritual book about a spiritual God with a spiritual kingdom, with a spiritual message that only the spirit of God can understand.
Maybe if people understood what earthquakes were - they would have a different opinion of them. They are caused by shifting in the earths plates. You can read about earthquakes on wikipedia. There is an iron clad scientific explaination for them. I used to live in Los Angeles and we had them all the time. There is a reason they happen in Los Angeles - because of the fault lines in the Earth's crust. There is a reason why they don't usually happen in other areas- no fault lines. So as much as they can't predice exactly where an earthquake is going to hit - they do know the areas that are more susceptible. I hope that eases people's mind a little bit.
Well you see Dewdrop, that's what you and I know and accept. The thing is, however, some get the idea that 8.5 quakes and/or the apparent "increase" in us hearing about or reading about earthquakes equates to there being MORE earthquakes in recent years than, say, 25 years ago. From there they extropolate, based on their biblical intepretartions, that such 'increase' MUST mean Jesus is soon to return or the world is coming to an end very soon.
Fact is, those monster quakes that kill lots of people are actually VERY rare and has always been VERY rare, but to hear some tell it, they are happening every week so the sky must be falling.

imo.
So you are clearly not a literalist I take it? When the Gospels say that there will be wars and rumors of wars and earthquakes in different places, those are not literal things it is speaking about?

The natural can certainly follow the spiritual, but we must apply what we read spiritually and ask the Lord to do that within us. His will - again, imo - is not to turn the world on its ear for entertainment, but to have a people who will show forth His image in the earth.
In short, everything we read should be filtered by who He is, what is His will, and His love toward us - pretty much in that order.
Volcanos are also caused by the plates shifting on the Earth's crust. Wikipedia also has a page that will explain what volcanos are for you. This is also why some places, like Hawaii (which was caused by volcanos) - have a lot of them, and some places don't. The Earth's crust is made up of plates that are constantly shifting. Where plates meet - there are often earthquakes and volcanos based on how the plates interact with each other. Sometimes one plate will go beneath another plate, sometimes they buckle, sometimes they slide. You can find out all about it at Wikipedia and many other places that will explain this to you if you want to understand how the Earth works.
(sry,I don't know how to do the lil' bubblies in the drink )
