Here is a picture of 'hell'. This is Gehenna, which means the valley of Hinnom. The KJV and many other bibles incorrectly translate Gehenna as 'hell' or 'hellfire' in the new testament.

This is the place Jesus referred to on the sermon of the mount in Matthew 5.

At the time of Jesus, it was used as a garbage dump. The fires burned continuously, burning up the garbage there. Maggots (worms) also flourished from all the dead bodies of criminals that were thrown there. But the fires have long gone out. The worms are probably still in the soil somewhere... those little guys seem to live forever!

So the next time you here about how Jesus taught on 'hell', realize He was referring to the place in this picture.

Here is a map of 'hell' - a.k.a. Gehenna:

You can visit it today - I understand it is quite a tourist attraction.

Here is some tourist info if you want to plan a trip to 'hell':

On a serious note, I've seen pictures of how beautiful Gehenna is now. The significance of that, as I see it, is that what once was totally desolate has been restored to health and beauty. The circumstances of this life, other's actions and our own can leave us feeling just as desolate as Gehenna once was. To have the hope that Love will restore us to health and beauty (metaphorically speaking) is a wonderful thing.

So if hell is actually a nice place, tell me again why it was important for Jesus to die the way he did?

Heresy.

Wrong! He was referring to eternal fire. The lake of fire. Eternal. Universalism is a heresy and so is this.

The "hotel rooms" Mary K Baxter and Bill Wiese described were about 6x6 without any amenities except for a nice view of the molten landscape. I'm sure Satan runs "book one trillion years, get three trillion years free" specials and his rates are more than reasonable, but Bill and Mary claim the rooms are filling up fast so you'd better make your reservation quick if you live in the North Dakota region and winter is approaching.
