If you believe an adversary is a fallen angel?
Then, consider this: "An angel is merely a messenger."
And this angel is a message of death past tense in time. Death of the spirit. He is the second death., the angel of death. Or a cry from the wilderness? A stranger with strange ways. Eye for an Eye. The ole Dragon curve fractal. Ride the waves.
Well you don't think Sinclair Lewis actually met Satan do you? He does give a very good idea of what Satan is doing in the world from his Lewis' point of view.

And, so does the Church, but it doesn't make it true.
Take a good look around you?
The God of this world presently is mankind.
And they can be very adversarial toward one-another.

You could study real exorcists to find out what people who have really met Satan to find out what they say. They know he is real.
I agree with you that many people today make the world God, they also make many worldly things their God. Find out what is most important to a person and what and who they put above God and you will find out what and who they consider their God is.
Every time this thread pops back up to the top, the title, "Who Is The Real Satan" reminds me of that old game show, "To Tell The Truth" where they would have three people pretending to be the real person and the game panelists were allowed to question them and make their best guess at which one was the "REAL" so-n-so. At the end the host would say will the REAL so-in-so please stand up. I loved that show.
Satan was the covering Cherub of the garden clothed in precious stones, the same stones we see in the Temple of Revelation. He was the most beautiful creature because he was the covering. He could speak to Eve just as the flesh speaks to us now, and Jesus called 3 of his disciples,'' Satan.''
When Jesus said,'' You speak from your father Satan,''
How was it that the disciples are sons of Satan able to speak the words of their father?
WE have to overcome the desires of Satan BECAUSE he is a part of us, just as he came tempting Jesus because Jesus was also made flesh and was influenced by the desires of Satan but he rejected those desires, and we were shown healing in a snake upon a pole in the wilderness because that is the picture of Christ in that Christ was a man in flesh, having fleshly desires.
The picture of the cross is to die to the flesh, die to the desires of your own will.
WE all sin because Satan speaks to us and he whispers in our right ear, he moves our right hand and he would have the left hand follow the right.
Sin became part of us when Adam and Eve went against God's command. It's called original sin and since the fall we are all born with it.
That does not mean we are scum though. Martin Luther thought all men were full of sin and hateful. Not so, we all have our good side that can overcome evil.
