I saw this posted in a thread, I think by Birdy, and thought it deserved it's own thread. Only for those who wish to learn something (all who wish to stay bound to the traditions of men, please avoid)

Everything you ever wanted to know about hell but were afraid to ask:

Part 2 - Sheol and Hadees in the Old Testament

blessings,

I agree, firstborn... the tradition of men, using deceitful reasoning of the world, is something to beware of..
Col 2:4 ¶ And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

CG: the Lord of the Universe declares one makes the commandment of God of none effect "by your tradition", and that one "transgresses the commandment" of God by his tradition. He further states that this is by "laying aside the commandment of God" by "holding the traditions of men."

In conjunction with the theme of this link, let us look at what the guys who read, write, and speak Hebrew have to say on this important subject.

If you look at the New Testament and who recognized the Messiah, you can see that alot of the guys who read, wrote and spoke Hebrew at that time missed the point...but I do agree with you about "not laying aside the commandment of God". (see Acts 17:30) Very important indeed.

hmmmm, the following just don't sound like heaven to me. in fact these are Jesus words.

Matthew 8:12 - But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Jesus gives a parable on hell:

Matthew 22:13 - Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

the kind of company those in hell will have:

Matthew 24:51 - And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 25:30 - And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

BOLD STATEMENT ABOUT HELL:

Luke 13:28 - There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

my goodness! all this talk about hell from such a reliable source as Jesus and his inspired word makes me run harder for heaven.

It comes across as smug when some groups of people point to others and say "HA! You'll be tortured forever for not believing as I do." Not saying that's how it's meant; but in most cases that's how it's taken.

Whether I believe in eternal Hell or not is of no consequence if I want to spread God's word to others. Instead, I should talk about the rewards of following Christ.

As one who believes in the eventual restoration of all, I believe that there are consequences for disobedience and that many will die. I also believe that death, which is described as the last enemy, will be abolished, made of no effect, rendered powerless and God will become all in all. (1 Cor. 15) Jesus has been made heir of all. (Hebrews 1) God bless.

I believe the entire Canon is His inspired word. I further believe that it is in complete harmony: in short, one spontaneous vibration of symphony. Do you know that the apostle John, who leaned on the Master's bosom, declares that death and hell are consummated in the Lake of Theos Pur? In fact, our God is the Source of everything, the Sustaining Force of everything, and the Goal of everything. Make that the whole enchilada, the ta pavnte, the all. "From Him everything comes, through Him everything exists, and in Him everything ends."
