Well I don't believe it to be silly, as I can't currently afford the daily rates at the Best Western for four weeks. I got a great job at a great place where I feel that I have a real opportunity to help. There was little time between getting the job and the start date, so this is all I could find that I could both afford and was available for the time period I needed.

The update post wasn't just a complaint. Others had expressed curiosity as to how that place turned out. And to be sure, just in case someone stumbled on this thread and decided that they might give that hotel a shot, I feel that it would actually be irresponsible for me to not give the update regarding how it turned out.

Indeed, I was warned, and thanks for all the help. It was less than a thrilling experience, true. But it's done, and I would do it again in a heart beat, if I had to in order to move forward with the opportunity that I found here. But, of course, I would not recommend that anyone put that on their list of places to stay if there is any other option.

Thanks again for all the help and advice.

Glad you made it through. Sounds like the place is even worse than I thought. But I understand--sometimes you do what you have to do.

Sometimes you definitely have to do what you have to do.

My company had property is Atsugi, Japan which was an air base during WWII. After the war it was one of the few places with a sizable stretch of clear land developable into an industrial park.

Housing in Japan is horribly expensive, especially for young people on the bottom of the pay scale.
So the company decided to build a dormitory to house younger recently hired workers. In one wing of the dormitory they decided to put some western style guest rooms. The local hotels were not all that great and even the nicer ones were traditional Japanese, mats on the floor for sleeping, oriental style toilet (let that one go by for now), etc.

So my first encounter in the company western guest rooms was also an experience. I had a budget to go out and purchase a video machine for the TV and everyone who came later was expected to add to the recordings. Yes they had cable TV, all in Japanese.

My first look at the bed was Ok it has a traditional western style mattress and box spring. But they are sized for a Japanese. Had to pull an end table over to put my feet on. Was extremely thankful to find it had a western style toilet. The shower was also doable providing I bent my knees to get my shoulders under it.

I had some prior experience with the local hotels and this beat them hands down. There was a community washer and dryer and that was another experience. The only instructions were in Japanese. So by trial and error we wrote our own instructions. The Japanese instructions labeled it as an automatic washer. In reality remember the old Easy Spinner? It was much closer to that. You first washed the clothes in a tub. Then you transferred those clothes to a spin basket for rinsing and spin drying.

The dormitory had an older couple in charge. It also had a dining room to serve breakfast and a quick dinner to the residents.

The resident managers made sure we got a western breakfast. This consisted of a couple of poached eggs on toast and some fruit. Believe me that was a delicacy.

So yes, at times you suck it up.

Over the years, the Atsugi businesses combined to have a brand new western hotel built downtown. Can't recall the name right now, but it was a first class hotel in any man's domain.
