And the most acclaimed Panther of all, Huey P. Newton, spent most of his childhood in Louisiana.
Why did it take 300 pages for the southerners to acknowledge this if they held him in such high esteem? All it's been so far was talking about entertainers and which city has the biggest flex culture.
We can move past the fluff and discuss which cities offer the highest QOL. Texas is automatically disqualified IMO when women can't receive legal (emergency) abortions, which really affects lower-income black women the most. I guess when we get down to actual issues the south isn;t looking to friendly is it? I suppose that's why we discuss ballers and millionaire trappers.
Just looked him up on Wikipedia and lo and behold his artistic influences were all from the Northeast (Bibal, Jill Scott, Qtip, Maxwell and Mos Def). Imagine that, one of the few southern producers with substance emulates the NE.
This didn't do what you think it did. It just gave my argument more credibility.
"Just looked him up" SMH.
I guess you're really no worse than Chris Brown in this regard since he had never heard of him either.
For people who have never heard of him, is it because they spend all day bouncing between Gunna and NBA Young Boy?
In the 90s/00s, it seemed that even the people who spent most of their time listening to Jay-Z/No Limit/Bad Boy were at least aware that people like Eric Benet, Kenny Lattimore and Kem existed. Especially if they were in the freaking music business.
Isn’t the talentless, disgraceful and violent P Diddy (or whatever name he calls himself today.) from NYC?
John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie and Louis Armstrong were all from the southern states. (NC, SC and LA) So was Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. (NC, TN and TN.)

Refer to post #3911. As I mentioned earlier, the main focus of this entire post is about millionaire housewives instead of the average black family. Talking about wealthy business owners or Tyler Perry are NOT representative of the average black person who is actually lower-middle class.
A true capital is one in which people regardless of their socioeconomic background can flourish which is why I said NYC Metro. Go to New Orleans or Atlanta and you'll see some of the saddest living conditions for black people.
How about cities with the best social safety net??
1."States in the South have, on average, the lowest TANF and UI benefits of any region, and those benefits are received by fewer would-be eligible adults and families than in other regions.
Southern states are also the least likely to provide a refundable EITC supplement or a minimum wage above the federal level of $7.25.
2.States in the Midwest and West have significantly weaker safety nets than the Northeast, on average, across several dimensions.
States in the South, Midwest, and West are much more likely to enact policies that discourage or prohibit labor union activity.
3. The South has a relatively higher Black population than the Northeast, while the West has a relatively higher Hispanic population. These demographic trends leave many families of color with relatively weaker safety net protections."

I understand Ashby’s argument, but just want to share a bit of the very respectful Jazz musicians (and other related artists that are successful and aren’t considered low-brow.) since he/she was talking about listening to Jazz in NYC.

The difference between the North and other regions is that we openly broadcast our problems (which is also a flaw in some instances) and shortcomings. We don't try to hide behind the success of the wealthiest 1%individuals and use it as a marketing tool to make our cities look better like they do in Dallas, Atlanta and Houston. This is why you keep seeing the focus on celebrity culture on this thread rather than showing the average middle-class family looking for a good home in an area with quality public schools.
So you are saying Jean Mitchell Basquiat didn't die of a heroin overdose.
That he didn't pimp himself to survive.
He didn't let the Campbell Soup Guy take naked photos of him to support his habit
Why wouldn't his sisters not want to protect his legacy?
Listen, I am of Caribbean descent and hold up Jean Mitchell Basquiat for his cultural contributions. But I am not going to hold him up in any moral superiority argument. You might have been throwing out names, and his is quite exotic, but it doesn't fit your narrative.
His character was no better than the ones you are belittling from the South. Basquiat brought out the freak in Madonna. She couldn't keep up

Who cares what his artistic influences are. Fact of the matter is the people that you named in the Northeast are abundant in the South.
It seems somewhat similar to the House of Umoja, albeit for adults. There's also the 100blackmenphilly organization that combines both charities IMO.
100 Black Men has chapters nationwide. A cousin of mine (female) works in the office of the Oakland chapter in California (or at least worked there when I visited her in 2006).
